Hi,

Need to get window boards for new build soon. anyone got advice on them ?
e.g. type of wood (do i need to varnish ?)
how to install ?

you need too seal them with sanding sealer once the carpenter has installed them and before any plastering starts.the mortar will burn raw wood and its really hard too remove the stains.that is if you are staining or varnishing the window boards, but if you are painting them then they need no treating ok.
 
Get good thick ones (subject to your taste, how much you like the look of them, etc.)
The standard rounded-edged teak (I think) windowboards, about 1" thick, are very nice, I think. You'll get them in pretty much any builders suppliers. Anything thinner will warp in direct sunlight, no matter how much sanding sealer you slap on.
(I speak from the perspective of a guy who lives in a house built by a company which must have gone to great trouble to source the thinnest, blandest, cheapest-looking windowboards this side of 1978)
 
we are getting teak window boards put..was told that these were the best, we have pine in our current house and there were fine too, really depends on the quality of the wood first day
 
Also obviously depends on what type of windows you have put in, wooden or upvc
 
Then you'll probably want to go for Teak.

They should be put in before the plastering so that the plasterers can plaster up to them. Can be put in after, but a bit messy. You will need builder or carpenter to put them in as there will be some cutting of drylining, and boards, etc.

If you are getting the actual boards yourself, be sure to get the right measurements, especially the widths (Depth of window ledge) They will come in standard lengths, but you can get different widths.
 
Also you could before the carpenter puts them in seal them with a couple of coats of Danish oil which can be painted or varnished afterwards.

Most of all it's very easy to apply.
 
You could save yourself a lot of bother with varishing and cleaning after the plaster if you went with PVC window boards you can get them all the same colours as the pvc windows and are much cheaper than going down the teak route! What we did in our place was nailed 3X2 to the blockwork and left enough of a lip for the scratch coat and skim and skimmed into this remove it after and install your baords hassle free and clean of hardwall

wouldn't go near pvc window boards, friend went with this option 3 years ago, lovely at the start, now they are sctrached and dull and cheapen the windows
 
What is people facination with of Irish people with PVC? Windows are bad enough, but window boards as well? Whats wrong with a good old fashioned lump of timber!!
 
We used teak, but money talks i guess €720 for our window boards in teak €200 in pvc!

Timber windows for our place €26k PVC €15k its very hard to justify these costs when working to a budget!

Birroc was looking for ideas so i gave him one, you can easily use pine boards too, but you will never get them to match, its all down to personal choice and what colours you want.

What's the fascination of Irish people with wood? it rots, you have to keep painting it and it can be more expensive

I'm nearing completion of a new build and want to finish off the red deal window boards before the floor coverings go down. The window boards were installed by chippie some time ago and given a rough coat of clear varnish to protect. There are a few knots in the wood that could do with tidying up and we have gaps developing at the join of two boards at the corner windows so these need to be filled too. Was thinking of sanding down existing varnish, filling and sealing again. Any pitfalls here? What is the best thing to use as a final seal on the boards?

does anyone have advise on getting a wooden window board to look exactly like the pvc golden oak
I would go with the pvc for an exact match but i feel a wooden one might be best.
Also hoping to insulate inside leaf of cavity with 50mm plasterboard
anyone got advise on this!
