My family have recently inhereted a plot of 15 acres upon which sits a stone built farmhouse with some stone outbuildings. The farmhouse is very old and not fit for 'modern' living, ie. no central heating, indoor bathroom, hot water etc etc. I'm on the lookout for a local surveyor to give me a rough idea on what options are available and viable regarding modernisation and complete renovation. I've had a pre-planning with the local council already and they're quite tight lipped and non-commital.

Would just like some good honest advice from someone in the field.

are you thinking of renovating the house to live in? you should get a surveyor, engineer or architect/architectural technician in to have a look at it to see how structurally sound the building is, approx. how much work is involved, etc. from there, an architectural design practice can prepare sketches for you to go in and meet the planner. if you have some sort of design in mind the planners may be more willing to give opinions.
