Need to save for school / college

To me, spending 12k on grinds seems a bit much unless they have their heart set on something specific and you're sure it will pay off. It sounds a little like you might be trying to solve a worry by throwing money at it, which is a natural temptation. The system here is really broken with everyone chasing points before they even know what they want to do, as if the ability to learn off a load of Irish by rote is a key driver of success.

I'd focus on what they want to do then look at universities and points. People underestimate how important the university is in terms of career opportunities, it's such a small pond here. I'd also consider the UK, where they can possibly focus on a smaller number of subjects that they need to do well in for the leaving. I have no personal experience on the UK process, but will have to think about this stuff myself in the future. I found a post online and it seems you can get a student loan in the UK for tuition and a SUSI grant for maintenance money: https://www.625points.com/2024/02/going-to-university-in-the-uk-as-an-irish-student-post-brexit.html.
