Neck cushions for travelling.

Not sure if I need one of these but thinking about getting one.

I notice that on recent flights I have drifted off for a 30 minute sleep. If a neck cushion could extend this to an hour or more it would be great and shorten the journey.
I will be doing a long haul later in the year also.

Are these things useful or will they end up in the wardrobe along with all the other crap I didn't need?

Is there a problem carrying them on board along with my carry on suitcase and small bag?

You can buy inflatable ones, which solves the problem of finding room for them.

But, to be honest, I've never found them much use. When you sleep sitting upright, or nearly so, your head tends to drop forward, and they do nothing to prevent that. And they do very little to prevent your head lolling to the side in a way that will wake you. It's your head that needs support when you sleep sitting up, not your neck.

I agree, I found them useless and I think they are stuffed in some corner never to be used! Decluttering at the moment so if I come across them it will be charity shop for them.

10 year old wanted one, I had one lying around from a trade exhibition I attended and gave it to him, utterly useless.

All it does is make you look like a bit of a rube when it comes to travelling :)

I've used the hollow ones that you hug, so you are lying face forward into it. Pretty good but doesn't work if the person in front of you reclines fully.

I think it's worth bringing one rather than not. You can get ones that do go someway under your chin. I've one with moveable filling in it like a beanbag. Its a little bulky, but good to stop the head lolling.

Personally I find a blow-up regular-shaped rectangular pillow is a much more comfortable support for my head and neck than a neck pillow, with the risk that it falls down.
