Hi,
I'm about to start a new job which will mean driving beyond Navan each day, circa 40miles in total. I'm thinking about moving to Castleknock/Phoenix park area and would then be able to drive straight onto the Navan Rd each morning. I want to live within the M50 side of Dublin for socialising reasons. Can anyone tell me what the Navan Rd is like each morning driving away from Dublin?
Regards, BCPK

Re: Navan Rd

Castleknock/Phoenix Pk to Navan is more than 20 miles, isn't it (until the new M3 comes in of course), so you might be looking at over 50 miles per day.

If you're doing 200 - 250 miles per week plus your week's work, there may not be much time (or energy) for your socialising! Although I commute myself, if I had a choice I'd prefer to live closer to work.

Re: Navan Rd

yeah, sorry I meant circa 40miles in total. If I'm going in the opposite direction to traffic it may not be cumbersome. Also a nice comfortable economical car is a must. Young enough to want to live close to Dublin, if the commute becomes too much I'll mve closer to work. Somewhere like Dunboyne castle is tempting

Going out that road is a nightmare. I used to go out to the Fairyhouse Market once a month on a Sunday, to bulk buy all the household toileteries etc. but having tried to approach it from various roads over the last few weeks, I've given it up as a bad job. It will probably be better after the new road is finished though. Why don't you give it a run someday at the times you would need to travel at, to see how bad/good the route is?

I travel the opposite way into town : there is normally quite heavy traffic at the navan road church (both ways) and again at the auburn avenue roundabout. remember a lot of people commute to the shopping centre andthe various industrial parks in ballycoolin etc. Don't know what it's like past there though but dunshaughlin is a snail's pace (bizarrely though the only place i ever got stopped for speeding - 32 in a 30). Also if trialling the route remember the schools now are either off or nearly closed. Taking a good 15 minutes off my 40 minute journey at the moment. The other thing to remember is that the various estates in Castleknock are a nightmare to get out of - the queue down auburn avenue in the morning to get onto the navan road either way is a nightmare.

will have to do a few dry runs but generally i'm hearing bad things. I may just move beyond the gridlock like dunboyne!! maybe with the greens in they'll open up navan rail link sooner rather than later. My other option is up the M1 and swing a left at ardee. Its longer but probably quicker!

If you're looking for alternatives to get to Navan from the Navan Rd area (yes, I know how strange that reads!), you could go N2 (Finglas/Ashbourne) to Balrath Cross and turn left which brings you to Navan via Kentstown, or keep on N2 to Slane and turn left at Slane for Navan.
M1/N33 to Ardee is a long detour for Navan!
Probably best to try your other suggestion which is to move beyond M50/Blanchardstown area and avoid the commuter rush as much as possible.

I work shift so I travel the Navan road at different times in both directions, I usually go the stretch you are talking about at around 7:30am and find it OK but the bus can cause a delay if you get caught behind one.

gipimann, i'm actually going to Kingscourt in cavan about 15miles north of navan so the ardee route works for that, its longer and there are tolls, As people have said the other option is to move beyond the m50 blanch commute area but then their goes social life in city centre during weeks. tis a muddle
