My vw golf 99 is burning oil

I have a 99 golf with a 1.4 engine. I have had it 18 months. It is a clean car but unfortunately it is using about 2.5 litres of oil every 1000 miles now. It has used oil since I bought the car but recently the problem has got worse. Has anybody else experienced this problem with golfs. Also does anybody know any reliable garages in Dublin that won t overcharge for engine repairs.
 
Unfortunately for you this is a very common problem on the 1.4 golf of that era, The main cause is the rings on the pistons, but if you go that far you should do the valve oil seals as well. Unfortunately the cost involved would not make sense for a car that old and a second hand engine will probably be just as bad.
