Hi everyone

I was at a garage yesterday looking at a new car worth €21,500. I have a 2001, Madza MX5, 62,000 miles, Silver, Black soft top in good condition, full service history and NCT due Jan 07.

Garage said mine was worth no more that €11,250. I looked on CBG and they say the average price is €16,950.

I called two other garages and they won't give me a price without seeing the car.

Does this sound like a fair price? Is there anyway i can check the Book Value myself?

Thanks

Zar

Sounds ridiculous. I am on the look out for an MX5, and for a 2001 in good condition, you are talking around the 15,000 mark, but it seems to be rediculous. You would be better selling it privately.

The problem with the CBG average price, is the price that other people are adverising their cars at, not at what they are selling at.

You could call mazda Ireland, and ask them for the book value.

Hi Bottle

I just tried two madza dealers and they won't give me the book value over the phone!

I am trying to save myself the hassle of going around difference garages. I was hoping that there would be a website that would give you the book value.

I tried the VRT calculator and it gives market value at €11,500 so I suppose its not far out.

The new car I am looking at is a bit of a find and have not been able to find another one so to sell private might take too much time.

Thanks for your comments will keep tring garages and see if I can get a variety of prices.

Two years ago I bought my then 5 year old MX5 for around €15k from a dealer - although mine also had a hard top. I'd imagine they wouldn't give you that much as they want to make a profit. Probably best selling it privately.

my brother in law just bought a 1999 japanese import MX5 with a tan soft top (no hard top) for 13k. nice car and we also had a look at some with another guy in Dublin who is opening a garage in Howth specialising in MX5 and i thought his prices were cheeky.
personally i think the garage are trying to mug you only offering you 11k for your own,i'd say try selling it privately in the free ad's or even on ebay..

If the CBG guide shows an average price for a car at price 22k for example. when you trade it you will never get this price . the dealer has to be able to sell in on at a profit in and around price 22k so how can you expevctt to get it from them.

A main deler will give you even less value as they may sell it on to a local deler if it is too old for their forecourt so they want a cut of this sale and the local dealer stilll needs to sell at a profit.

Trading in is "handy" but if you want your full value you have to take the time and effort to sell privately.
