How do I setup MSN so that I know when friends are online to allow me chat live with them?

Yes. Make a hotmail a/c and then when installing MSN it should give you a step-by-step setup guide. (Bear in mind that most users seem to prefer Windows Live Messenger because of it's more advanced features.)

I am using Windows Live Messenger not sure about MSN

Yeah I do the same thing with my gmail also.

Basically go to www.passport.com and you can register any email address as a Microsoft ID which can be used with msn or windows messenger

Is it possible to mix chat clients? i.e. - If i have Win Live Messenger installed can I chat with people who are using the Yahoo Messenger client?
