MS Life Chat headphones software won't work twice

I have a headset with microphone for conference calls. However, although it worked great on desktop PC, it won't work with laptop although I tried to install the disc software on laptop. It keeps stalling me saying there is no internet connection even when there is clearly an internet connection. Is is designed like this to prevent it being used with more than one machine in the house? Surely not. Any ideas welcome thanks in advance

Perhaps you could temporarily connect your laptop via cable (instead of wireless) to your router - then see if the software will install.
 
Unfortunately, the use of the wired connection with modem did not get around the error message that internet connection was not on. So still no joy.
