Moving to New York

My daughter is going to work in New York for six months and is trying to find suitable accommodation, i.e. somewhere that is safe and not too expensive. She would be willing to share. I had thought YWCA might be a good bet as I stayed in YWCA in Los Angeles myslef in the 1970's. Would anyone have some ideas about this, or suggestions as to safe areas etc. Would appreciate any help as nobody in my family have any connections in New York.
 
I would advise posting on the NY forum over on tripadvisor.com - the regulars on that board are Soooooooooooooo helpful. Also, if she's going to work, will her job not help her find accommodation.
 
Oh thanks for that shesells - she has registered on that site. Also she has decided to stay with the friend of a friend until she gets to know the place a bit better, so i feel quite relieved.
