Moving Gas Meter?

Hi

We are sale a agreed on a property with Gas mains already isntalled.

The property needs modernising and currently the gas mains goes into the kitchen with an old meter located on the wall in the kitchen.

Am getting quotes to install new central heating and each person has advised us to move the gas meter outside.

Have rung bord gais to get a quote but they cant give me a price or an indication of a price without coming to see it.

Problem is they wont come to see it unless the Gas line has been changed to our name which wont happen until after we finalise the purchase. On top of that they wont give you a time they just book a day and can arrive at any time so would have to take the whole day off work.

All I want is an indication of how much of a ballpark figure it will cost to move.

As above the gas line is already at the house. We jsut need the meter moved from inside the kitchen to outside the front of the house (terraced house), meter needs to move approximately 20 ft.

If more info is required just let me know

I have heard figures of €750 to move the meter. You have also have to get the internal pipe work changed your self.

We have quote from Bord Gais Networks of Eur 567 to move the meter from front of the house to the side. The builder will need to have a trench dug and they will lay lay the piping and connect. Nice earner for them!!

Which builder? builder for bord gais or builder doing the central heating?

I've heard this figure quoted too - friend of mine had a meter moved about 15 ft along the front of her house to accommodate a widened driveway. Bord Gais recommend/use specific contractors to do the work if I remember.

Bord Gais will not provide a builder, trenches etc. will need to be in place so they can just arrive and hook it all up.
