Mouse pointer on laptop keeps drifting

I have a laptop (Dell Inspiron 8100) which has a touchpad mouse as well as a lump between the "g" and "h" which controls the mouse. It is becoming a regular occurance that when I turn on the laptop the pointer on the screen begins an initially slow course into the top right or bottom left of the screen. This is extremely frustrating.

When I plug in a usb mouse into the laptop the mouse never drifts. I'm almost certain it is the lump between the "g" and "h" keys that is causing the drift. Is there any way to make this mouse control inactive while retaining the touchpad and not having to use a USB mouse.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Just go to start -->(settings)--> control panel, then double click on the mouse icon. Under "Device Settings" you can click to box to disable the pointing stick. I am hoping this solves the problem too.

May not be precise, this is for a Dell Inspiron 4000. but said to work with up to 8000.
