Motorola L6-iMode Mobile UNLOCKING

Is it possible to get a Motorola L6-iMode unlocked? I bought a new one of these mobiles in the UK and it has an O2 sim locked into the UK network. I would like to use my Irish O2 Sim card but O2 support in UK tell me that the moby has 2b active for 12 months b4 they will issue the unlock code.
