Motor tax

Hi there,

Does any one know if it is possible to change from the engine size tax to an emissions based rate?

I have a 1.9 diesel which is up for renewal next month. I have noticed that the rate based on engine size is 590, but if it was on emissions on the particular car it would be 430. Needless to say, I would prefer to keep the 160 difference!!

Unfortunately the car is 2005, so it may not be possible to change but if anyone has any info, I would appreciate it.

From looking at this website https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/staticContent.do?page=motortaxrates

it appears that you can only tax it by engine size:

CO2 EMISSION LEVEL RATES FROM 1 JULY 2008
The attached document sets out the rates of motor tax for brand new vehicles/imported vehicles registered in this country after 1 July 2008. Cars registered before 1 January 2008 will continue to pay motor tax on the basis of engine size (cc rates are shown in previous link).

Of course. We were never going to get the chance to save money on road tax on our current cars.
