Motor Tax Refund

I recently scrapped my car and have the Certificate of Destruction.

When I printed off the RF120 to get a refund of the tax there is a spot for it to be signed and stamped by the Gardai. Do i need to get this done when the vehicle is not being declared off the road. Its just gone. How is it a matter for the Gardai?

Also do I need have the tax disc because i think my cleaning-obsessed missus may have chucked it.

"IMPORTANT: Tax discs must be surrendered immediately as refunds are generally calculated from the first of the month following the surrender of the disc. A minimum of three unexpired whole calender months must be left on the disc when surrendered."

Looks like no tax disc no mun.

Garda is just witnessing your declaration is true.

I did this recently...didn't have the tax disc but did have my email renewal

But sure what use is the tax disc? I get that if you are looking to refund and you still have the car. but the car has been destroyed. Shannon has the VLC. And why do i need Garda to witness my declaration is true? There is a million other forms out there where your own declaration is sufficient.
