Hello everybody,

What exactly does a mortgage underwriter do? Is this the final hurdle or will they go through the application in its entirety?

Many thanks
George

Isn't the mortgage underwriter the institution who actually advances the loan? Maybe you could give some more detail about your situation to clarify what you mean?

Ah I'm sorry, I'm a novice at this.

I have submitted a mortgage application to my branch, it seems to spend a couple of days here and there before findally ending up at what my branch called the 'underwriters'. I was just wondering what they do exactly.

George,
It sounds like these will be the people that will make the call on whether they feel you can make the repayments.

Underwriters are people (yes actual people!) who look at the mortgage application form and supporting documentation and decide whether it should be approved, declined or further queries raised in line with the institutions lending guidelines. Some are stricter than others, some are more lenient. Bit like judges really
