In September 2006, with my health in perfect condition, I took out a new mortgage and moved house. A few months later I began feeling sick and was eventually diagnosed with Crohns Disease in mid 2007.
Ive just come out of hospital again and somebody mentioned mortgage protection cover to me. Do I need to advise my broker of this illness? Will if affect my cover or cause me problems for the future?
Firstly, as you didn't have the condition when you took out the initial cover it will have no bearing on your present cover and you don't need to declare it to either your broker or the insurer.
If you apply for additional cover (unless you have an option to increase without additional medical evidence on your policy), you will need to fully disclose the condition.
Different companies can have differing views and the potential to obtain life cover or life cover at a higher premium than normal can improve after long periods of good health. Regular check ups to keep an eye on the condition and your health are also a big help.
The fact that you are now 2 years down the road after initial diagnosis can be of help - not sure if it was because of IBD that you were recently in hospital.
Other factors which help improve chances can be down to being a non smoker and family history.
Having a broker undergo research with different companies will also improve chances.
