Hi,

I have just found out that after 8 years that I have not received any mortgage interest relief - It is a long story. I want to pay off my whole mortgage now but want to know can I claim my mortgage interest relief for the last 8 years or will I be only able to claim for last year? Does anyone know how tax office will handle backdating the tax relief?

Thanks

You can backdate claims for outstanding tax relief by up to 4 tax years - i.e. back as far as 2004 right now. Unfortunately you cannot go back further than that. You should contact Revenue immediately and see what they say. they may be able to grant you backdated relief as a lump sum payable to you or the lender.

i just applied for 4 years (and was only owed 4) just ring them up they are grand and will probably tell you there and then on the phone how much you will get and roughly when.

Did they say if they issue a cheque or only payment to the lender (where the mortgage has not yet been cleared)?
