Hi,

looking for some advice, re if i am eligible for mortgage interest relief.

Myself and my wife bought our first house in Oct 2003 and then sold this property in Feb 2008, paying off the mortgage and bought a new home in FEb 2008 taking our a new mortgage, were/are we eligible for mortgage interest relief since 2008????

I heard a few govt ministers including Brian Hayes in response to the criticism of the unfairness of the property tax on those who already paid huge stamp duty while buying in the boom, in response say the Govt did extent mortgage interest releif for people buying at the height of the boom, but who was this extented for was it just 1st time buyers?? or was it also for people like myself and my wife who where 2nd time buyers but took out a new mortgage to buy our new house???

Hi maccs did you not apply in 2008 for interest relief . I bought 2nd house in 2010 and got interest relief so you are fully entitled to it . There are many posts on amm about your second question . But if you haven't applied for interest relief you can do in online with the revenue and as far as i remember you can go back 4 years .

Hi Reddanmm,

thanks for the reply and no i hadnt applied as i thought as it was our 2nd house that we werent entitled to it, i had assumed that it was just for 1st time buyers!! we did get tax relief for a number of years when we bought our first house on 2003.

When you bought in 2010 was this as a 2nd time buyer?? I thought if we were eligible this would be done automatically like it was when we bought our previous house?

I bought my first house in 1986 sold that in 2009 and bought new house in 2010. You have to go online and do it yourself . Its pretty straight forward to do and it has the option of claiming for the years you didn't claim .
You should get a nice few bob back an it usually only takes a few weeks to go through . Hope this helps
