Myself and my fiance bought a house last year (we are first time buyers). We have been claiming Mortgage Interest Relief (at the single rate). We are getting married in a few months time. Are we entitled to claim the MIR rate for a married couple after we wed or can we only still claim what we are claiming now? Any advice much appreciated.

Re: guest

There is no difference to the married vs single TRS amount so once the property is in both names there will be no difference....

This is how it works:

2 x individual TRS on mortgage = 1 x married couple TRS on mortgage

IMHO there is little or no benefit in combining tax status upon marriage unless one party intends not to work, or has a part time/low paid full time job.

I'm going to get shot down now!..........................................................................................................................................
