Mortgage in 2names, Deeds in 1

My partner was gifted land so the deeds are in his name, while to afford to build the mortgage will be in both our names. I understand that this means I owe half the debt but own nothing, but obviously would be prefer if I did!

So other than marriage where the ownership is automatically transferred to both parties, what is the best way to protect my interests? Should we have a joint tenancy agreement or a will? Put me on deeds now and pay the tax?

Both first time buyers, land valued at 70K when transferred from his parents.

Any advise?

I would be interested to hear the answer on this one.

I have owned a house in my own name, and now have purchased another with my wife, who is a FTB.

I am wondering if we do this, ie apply for the mortgage together but have the deeds in her name, are we liable for stamp duty?
