I have been working as an IT contractor now for a year and while i'm not too interested in buying a house just yet with the state of the market I would like to buy a place maybe towards the end of next year. As a contractor what are my options in terms of getting a mortgage? I earn about 6k per month after tax and have no debts currently.

Ideally a lender likes to see a self-employed person (which you are, technically) with 2 - 3 years self-employment behind them and accounts available for that period. However, you may be OK with less if you can show lots of relevant experience prior to contracting, qualifications, long contract etc.

Thanks. I would have about 7/8 years permanent experience behind me and hopefully by the time I actually do want to get my own place I will have a couple of years contracting accounts.

I am an IT contractor and got a mortgage 2 months ago. I use an umbrella company so they gave me the equivalent of a salary cert form that a permanent employer would give, and I also had a long permanent job history behind me, I had no problems at all!
