Hi there, I am a permanent IT employee at the moment. I am looking into going contracting in the near future. I have the option of a weeks contract in another company at a very good daily rate. I have enough hols left to be able to take a weeks holidays to do this contract. Can I do it without my employer finding out??
I know lots of teachers and college lecturers who do work outside thier educational establishment. EG one guy runs a surf school during his holidays for cash, another guy lecturing in construction studies does plans etc, a quantity surveyor I know does costings for his builder buddies etc.
What does your contract of employment say about this? Some contracts of employment explicitly exclude working for a third party or on your own account.
Even if your employer allows you to do work for a third party there may be implications for the employer under the working time act. I heard this issue being discussed by the taxi regulator Ger Deering on the radio last week. Pat Kenny asked him what was to stop some one working a 40 hour week and then going out driving a taxi in the evening. The taxi regulator said the main employer had a responsibilty in the matter but that this was outside the scope of the Taxi Regulator.
There is a difference between doing two jobs, which anyone can do, and
taking a weeks vacation to do another job. This might be against your contract.
Will your employer find out ?
No idea, Ireland is a small place, will the IT manager in the company you are doing the contract for, know your IT manager ?
