Can anybody recommend a good hotel to stay in monte carlo and also is it mad expensive over there....?

Don't know about hotels - I wouldn't imagine they'd be cheap, but for other stuff, if you're used to Dublin prices, you won't find it expensive.

A couple of years ago, I was there and ended up parking in the car park under Casino Square. I wasn't too pleased, as I figured it would cost an arm and a leg. Turned out to be cheaper than parking in any of the car parks in Dublin.....

I'm sure you can pay silly money for stuff there in some places, but for normal things (lunch etc.) it's easy enough to pay less than Dublin prices for similar quality.

Been down that area a few times. Have always stayed in Nice and commuted. It is only 25 mins on the train. Then you can head the other direction as well to Cannes, Antibes. But I would be used to operating on a restricted budget!

would second the suggestion of staying in nice, there are loads of trains between nice and monaco every day and it only costs about 6/8euro one way. i stayed in the centre of nice for 5 nights last year, and got the train to monaco one of the days. when we were going we looked into the option of staying in monaco/monte carlo but as it was summer it was way too expensive for us. hotel in nice was 40euro for room only per night, about 15mins walk from train station and it was just off the main shopping st. lots of ncie places to eat also.
monte carlo isn't as expensive as we'd thought it was going to be. we had a lovely dinner in a restaurant behind the church where princess grace is buried, and it was only about 15 euro each for a main course and wine.
restaurants and bars up around the casino were expensive, I paid 5euro for a coke.

Thanks everybody - I booked nice today and I will travel to Monte Carlo by train - has anybody any tips on how to get Aer Lingus to upgrade me on the flight out (cheeky I know)....

Well it would help if you were flying on a route where they had a class to upgrade to

From www.aerlingus.com "Inflight Services":
Inflight Economy Service

We offer one class of service on all UK and European flights.

Granted, not easy to find on their website. But just try to book business class through their web-site -- it's only available on transatlantic flights.

So short of them asking "Is there a pilot on board?" you won't be getting upgraded seating on a flight to Nice! Though you could try to get an emergency exit seat, which has more leg room.
