I've done this regularly and, as has been pointed out, all the guy needs is your sort code, account no. and the account holder's name — all of which is printed on every cheque you've ever written. It doesn't give him 'access' to your account or anything. An electronic transfer is simply quicker and more convenient, because you can see that the funds have gone through — instantaneously, if you both bank with BoI.
