Monday not a bank holiday?

Hi all

accountants inform me today that sunday is the
bank holiday,patricks day,therefore staff working are
paid double time and monday is a normal working day for staff?

Is this true?i was sure monday was a full bank holiday.


Im in the retail sector.

Where a public holiday falls on a weekend, you do not have any automatic legal entitlement to have the next working day off work. This occurs in 2013 when St Patrick's Day (17 March) falls on a Sunday. This means that Monday 18 March 2013 is not a public holiday. When this happens you are entitled to one of the following:

• A paid day off within a month of the public holiday
• An additional day of annual leave
• An additional day's pay

Your employer can require you to attend work on those days.

There has never been a 'St Patrick's bank holiday weekend' its just when the day falls at the weekend, its celebrated as if it was a bank holiday weekend because most people would get the Monday off in lieu of Pats day falling on the Sat or Sunday.

I think the core question here is whether Monday or Sunday is the official PUBLIC holiday? The posts above clarify the matter in relation to the public holiday.

Banks are closed on Monday, so that is a bank holiday, which is presumably not relevant to retail workers. I think the OP's question should have been only in relation to which day is the public holiday.
