My daughter's mobile phone suddenly stopped working the other day (much to her dismay). This was bought at the end of January 2009 and cost approx 200 euro. I am looking for the receipt but so far no luck. It was purchased in a local vodaphone store. Haven't been able to make it to the store as yet, and wondering if anyone knew what our rights are on this? Is she entitled to a replacement phone, phone to be fixed, refund? It just suddently powered off and appears to be attempting to power on, and not starting up properly. She's attempted removing the battery and replacing, charging the phone again but no joy as yet. Would like to get an idea of our consumer rights before I go to the store.

The phone will either have a 12 or 24 month warranty depending on manufacturer - once the fault hasn't been caused by moisture/liquid or physical damage you'll be entitled to have it repaired under the warranty. If it is moisture or liquid it will be unrepairable and you'll need to purchase a replacement...

The phone would've come with a 12month warranty. The same thing happened to mine, just 12 days before end of 12 month. Took it back to shop n they sent it off for repair. No problems. This was with carphone warehouse. good luck

Cruiser1427 is correct, most likely it will be covered for 24 months so i'd just head back to the shop and get it sent off for repair

That's great - thanks for the feedback on that. Any idea if I'll need to have the receipt with me to ensure it's covered? Not sure I still have that but they may have a record of sale in the shop. Thanks again !

Doubtful that the shop will have a record of the purchase. Did you possibly pay for it by Visa or Laser and have a copy of this?

I think (could be wrong) Sometimes the manufacturer (not the shop) determines if its covered by looking at the serial number and thus manufacturing date.

Usually the shop take record of the serial number at the point of sale so they will know but otherwise the manufacturer approved repair centre it is sent to will be able to tell if its in warranty or not.

Great, thanks for the info. I'll take a look back at my bank statements to see if I used a debit / credit card but hopefully if not they will have a record as we may have paid by cash. I know we definitely used a gift card in part payment. Thanks for the info - will let you know how we get on during the week, when the shop opens back up.

I've had problems with my current phone and have found it quicket to send it directly to an approved repairer who does warranty repairs

In my case i used www.mprc.ie close to work so handy! Had the phone back in a day! No affiliation with said company - just a very happy customer

Yep, I've used them too. Actually if you Google there are two similar -sounding companies that repair mobiles under warranty. Both are in Dublin. Both will know the age of your phone and the warranty length. Both will not charge for warranty repairs (often up to 24 months) though one charges in advance for return postage.

I reckon most people don't know about them!!
