Missing Catalytic Converter

Hi there

I bought my 02 318 BMW in October 07 and at the time had it serviced by the dealer so as to pass the NCT - which it did. I've just had it serviced again last week and the guy who did it has told me that there is no Catalytic Converter on the car. It's basically been replaced with an empty box. Apparently some people remove them to get extra performance from the car but emissions can go way up.

Would anyone know if it's illegal not to have a catalytic converter as I think this is the case in the US? Also would it be illegal to sell a car without one?

Thanks

I thought exhaust emissions was part of the NCT, can't see how a car would pass without a cayalytic converter?

Exactly , a car without a cat would never pass on emissions.

I realise that but bizarrely it did actually pass the NCT without the cat. ?I've had nothing done to the car since it passed. Makes me slightly cynical of the whole NCT process now.
