Misleading offers in Supermarkets

I was in Supervalu yesterday and they had a big sign in front of their chickens 'Better than half Price, €2.60' so I put one in my basket and went up to the checkout where I was charged €3.60. Puzzled I went back and looked at the sign and there in minute font was per kg.

Does anyone else find this kind of thing very annoying? I know it was only a euro but it's misleading and unfair on customers who might be really struggling. I asked one of the staff to pass my view on to management and her comment was 'All the Supervalus are doing this. It's not just us'.

I find Dunnes the best for offers to be honest. I used to go to Super Valu and Lidi each week to try to reduce the cost but now realise that if i just go to Dunnes I get it cheaper. Their deals are very straight forward

I know, but you don't expect to have to go around your local supermarket with a magnifying glass in case there's a hidden trick in every deal.

same thing happened us the very first time we bought our christmas bird - some organic thing priced at say €10 and then at till €50. Very embarrassing as we had to bring it back, luckily only tesco's....

I've found certain local shops advertising great offers - but don't bother to reprogram the till for the offer. I've brought this to their attention on two occasions. First time was told the offer finished last week but was given the price. The other occasion a sign displayed wine on offer for less than half price (26.99 now 13). But on the top shelf the same wine was advertised full price at 20 euro.

Make sure to check the price you pay mathces the offer. In some cases I think they are genuine mistakes but some shops I think are chancing it. I have seen other offers of 2 for a euro. Individually they item was 49 cent.

I have seen this in my local shop a couple of times, where something is reduced, but when you arrive at the till, it still scans at full price. I always check now when they have any offers that I am getting the reduced price at the till.

Superquinn used to do a good deal in that if an item scanned at a higher price than displayed or if it didn't scan at all you got the item for free...not sure if they're still operating that way though...

A bigger problem is the alleged special offers that aren't, such as buying two products promoted as an offer, but when you look at buying them individually, they work out cheaper.

Agree with Latrade 100%. Tescos are very bad for this. Big blod and bright advertising enticing you take up the "Special Offer" but when you check individual prices usually much better offers exist.
Seems like hard work but for the past few months have been brining a calculator when shopping. Drives wife mad ( bonus point!!!! ) but when I show the comparisions there is definitly a difference. DON'T BE MISLEAD BY THE ADVERTISING. CAVET EMPOR - BUYER BEWARE

Have you notice in Dunnes Yellow Price Board equals good value about 75% of the time and Green Price Board bad value most of the time.

You are right to bring your calculator if only to work out whether the 3 for 2 or 2 for 1 or buy one get one 1/2 price offers really are good value. I notice that the prices are jacked up for a few weeks, the the multiple purchase come in and then the prices drop a few weeks after the offer ends.

Bastmati rice at tescos and sv @ €1.49/kg is good value at the moment its €1.89 in Lidle, Aldi and Dunnes. Funny how the prices were the exact same everywhere before tescos and sv broke ranks!
