mid range hotel or self catering in Malta?

Going to Malta mid May. It's an extended family trip for four nights, so granny (young), young free and single aunt and uncle, and 30's parents with 11 month old baby.
Can anyone recommend ideally self catering in a hotel, I think this would be the best of both worlds? not sure where to go, open to suggestions, assuming st. julians is the place.
