Mice....when is it safe to assume they gone?

Right. Loosing my mind here. Heard mice in attic/ceiling before Christmas. Contemplated moving out and having Christmas elsewhere but 3 children convinced me to stay put. Contacted pest control. They came out, saw small evidence of mice, laid poison, filled up 2 possible entry sites. They checked poison 3 times and has not been touched.
No longer hearing them in attic/ceiling but can hear at night in cavity wall and over ceiling. Obviously they are getting food from somewhere! I could not set or check a trap! Kids won't either. Have a dog so don't want him Getting caught in the traps. Surely they would have eaten the poison at this stage - it's been nearly 8 weeks since first poison put down.
Even if I was to set trap, don't know where I would put them. Have not seen any evidence of them in the house. All suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

My advice would be to contact you pest control company.

They should come out to resolve the original problem at no cost. Something is wrong if the mice are back within 5 weeks of last visit by the company!

They have been coming out Marian - 3 times since Christmas. they say the poison is untouched or only slightly disturbed. He cannot see any evidence of them. I think he thinks I am imagining it at this stage Wondering now if they are in my neighboutprs house and just getting into my cavity walls but eating Next door?

Just going on my experience but I would set some traps if I were you. They are so effective ( my death toll of 15 is proof enough!) they are very easy to set no need to fear them. Use the Pre baited ones with peanut butter ( I always topped them up to increase smell but not necessary). Obviously if your kids are very small I appreciate your concern but believe me if mice actually in the house they will go for the traps. Set them in corners by skirting board. When u catch one if you can't bear to empty just bin the lot ( though that would have got expensive in my case). Surprised vermin control didn't set some..... the guy my wife spoke with was in favour of traps over poison. Bite the bullet and try to overcome any squeamishness/ethical issues as long as you keep small kids away from them. And noproblem dog def looking for breakfast and as for getting another dog..., suggested before Xmas... youngest didn't speak to us for days! As far as he is concerned his " brother" is irreplaceable!!!!

"youngest didn't speak to us for days!"
What a lovely position to be in. Don't you worry, when hunger and need kick in they'll speak, in a whisper to start, but that will increase dramatically if you yourself adopt their original decision. Go get a puppy and don't worry, it works, believe me.
