They charge approximately 1.5% on each transaction and we are handling in excess of €40k per month. Who else are worth considering or speaking with or how does this rate compare with others? Any help greatly appreciated

Realex is just a gateway, and they'll use whatever processor you tell them. We moved to Payment Plus which is a Barclaycard partner. Our Credit card rate is 0.85% but a 0.5% fee is added for non pin transactions or business card transactions. (most processors charge this) Our debit card rate is 0.45% - the same as cash lodgement rate of the bank.
