Melbourne Property

My wife and I are moving to Melbourne in 2 weeks for approx 2years maybe more. We are considering buying a property there. Anyone have any tips or experience with this in Melbourne? I have looked at the threads re property in Australia - Sydney is covered well and Perth mentioned a little but nothing really on 'marvellous' Melbourne.
Any thoughts?
 
I wouldnt suggest doing anything until you get there and get an 'on the ground' perspective'. Property in Sydney and Melbourne have performed poorly since 2004 but you should have a better chance of getting a good property once you know the lay of the land

Came home from Oz 2 years ago after spending 4 out there in Melbourne.

look at the the www.age.com.au good paper for melbourne
domain.com.au i think is good rental site.

St kilda is a good suburb had good and some bad areas, I would recommend staying south of the city as I thought i was a better area generally.

Toorak is posh have you plenty of money
Chapel street, arty but good area to rent
South melboune, depends on area, could be nice could be bad...
 
Most likely will not actually be possible in your circumstances. Australia have some fairly draconian measures to prevent foreigners investing in residential property. This may be of interest to you...
