Medium to long-term equity investments outside of pension

If someone wants to invest in international equities with a high level of diversification and outside of a pension wrapper, is there any thread/available summary that explains the various options?

The type of info I'm looking for:
- what type of diversification can be readily achieved
- what are the tax implications
- what are the charges

For this query, I'm not particularly interested in examining the holding of shares directly.

Managed funds?

Investment trusts?

ETFs?
