Hi

Has it definitely been reduced to 20% for 2009? I can't see anything about this on the revenue site.

This page: [broken link removed]

says

"Tax relief is available at the taxpayer's highest rate of tax."

Maybe it hasn't been updated?

Yes - standard rate relief from 2009 onwards once the Finance Bill is passed and becomes law.

http://www.finance.irlgov.ie/documents/publications/financeno.2%20bill%202008/FinNo.2memo.pdf (Department of Finance - Explanatory Memo Finance No.2 Bill 2008)

Section 8 amends Section 469 of the Taxes Consolidation Act,
which provides income tax relief in respect of expenditure incurred
in the provision of health care. With effect from 1 January 2009 the
relief will be granted at the standard rate of tax with the exception
of expenditure incurred in respect of nursing home expenses. These
will continue to be allowed at the marginal rate of tax for 2009.

thanks Clubman

Does that mean you can still claim at your marginal rate for 2008? It's not clear. I'm talking about claiming today for last years expenses.

Yes - marginal rate relief for 2008. Standard rate relief from 2009 onwards.
