Medical Expenses Rebate Confusion

Recently I made a tax return aplication for medical expenses for the year 2006. My expenses totalled arond 1400 and I recieved a rebate of E150. I pay tax at 41c in the Euro. The claim was made in respect of my own personal expenses only(ie. for just one person).

When I enquired as to why my rebate was so low I really didn't get an answer that made any sense to me. I was told that the sum I recieved was a "rebalancing" .I asked if this meant I had underpaid tax in 2006 and was told they didn't know.

Could anyone tell me how medical rebates are calculated ? Are they added into tax credits or somewhere that is not immediately obvious ? I have always understood my medical rebates before and they always seemed to come in at around 40% of my total claim. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading :)

The fact that your refund was less than 41% of your claim would indicate that you had underpaid tax during the year by the difference.

You should have received a P21 balancing statement, which would show all of the plusses and minuses of your tax affairs for the year.
