On the revenue website it says you can claim relief for:
Endodontics - Root Canal Treatment

This involves the filling of the nerve canal and not the filling of teeth.

Now, the dilemma, in order to fill the root canal(s) the dentist obviously has to open the tooth and subsequently fill it. My dentist ( in Holland) is very specific with his invoices and every piece of work is listed separately, so in stead of "1 rootcanal treatment on tooth 16 XXX Euro" it will be a list of separate work items that are needed to complete the root canal treatment on tooth 16. Can I claim for all these work items ? Incl the last one, the filling ?

its all part of the same treatment even if it is itemised imho

Oh, actually one more thing. When I get a lot of work done on my teeth I'd like to get it done in one go and I get intravenous sedation (you are asleep, but stll have your reflexes and you do as you're told . This now does not come cheap as it requires an anesthetist and assistant. It does not say anywhere that you can't claim for it and it is definitely not routine, but it is also I believe very uncommon in Ireland. So should I try and claim for it as part of the root canal treatments or not ?

In order to claim for non routine dental work the dentist has to complete form Med 2. You have to complete Med 1 form and attach the med 2 form.

If the dentist does not include the anesthetist and assistant costs I would include thenm in the Med 1 form. Make sure you get a receipt from them.
