Medical Card OAP query

Hi,

My nana has been requested to get means tested I think for her medical card. Shes had a medical card for as long as I can remember. She doesnt have to much money in bank account around 10k and then draws her pension.

Shes afraid they might try to take her medical card off of her. Does anyone know what the limits are etc for a medical card ones its means tested for an OAP.

How capital is assessed for the under 70s
All capital (savings and investments) is taken into account for medical card purposes. However, income on the savings/investments or property of €36,000 for a single person and €72,000 for a couple is disregarded.
The disregard figure only applies once where both savings and property (other than your own home) are being assessed.

The first 36k of savings is disregarded for the medical card means test, so her savings won't affect her entitlement at all.

If her only income is a SW pension, then even if that income is above the guidelines, she'll be entitled to the medical card.

The income limits are:
Single person over 70 €700pw
Single person 66-69 €201.50

Thanks for the replies shes nearly 90 so I can let her know she wont have any problems with this and to jsut fill the forms in and send them back.

I know there are probably a few 90 year old millionaires in the country, but it is kinda sad to see bureaucracy means testing very elderly people for medical cards. there should be no means testing for people like your nana. she will get her med card ok, these means tests requests just worry elderly people too much and should be ended. I have 2 elderly relatives 79 and 91 in hospital at moment,the various health/gov agencies involved don't make any allowances for the fact that they are elderly, frail and fearful.
