Medical card-Nursing home?

Hi,

My dad was in hospital for an operation. He is going to require a week post op care in a nursing home. My understanding is that we have to pay for this and his medical card (he is 74) wont cover it how ever he says ypu get a week free on the medical card?

Is he right?
