I am researching these for my mother. She lives alone and I often worry in case she falls in or around the house. These are the ones worn around the neck/wrist, which when pressed dial up to five phone numbers until the phone is answered and the alarm raised. I have a few companies in mind but wonder has anybody any experience of buying/using these.
 
Yale make one which is available from B & Q. Its around €70 and plugs into the phone line with a base unit which you can put say next to bed and a pendant for round neck. Range for pendant is about 50-100 metres from base unit I think. You can put in message and up to 3 numbers and that message is then relayed in turn to the numbers. If one doesnt answer it goes to next one. There's also an "open call" facility which lets you speak with the person ( only from the base unit not the pendant) for up to 2 mins. Got one for my dad & works fine. We had a false alarm when he pressed the pendant button without realising when trying to open a tupperware container & pressed it against himself( it's depressed in the pendant to avoid this really ) , but overall it's fine. Good security.

Just noticed it's also in Argos
 
next door neighbour to my folks had the eircom one, have to say it worked very well for her.
No matter which one you choose, it depends on the ability/closeness of the people who are rang and getting your mother to actually wear it and not put it away safe(as my sister's mother in law does)

Yes, my 82 year old mother would be one of those who will 'keep it for good' in the drawer, whilst she climbs the ladder to clean the windows
I will try the Yale one.
Don't know if the healthboard supply those, but I will ask anyway.
 
If you contact your mothers local public health nurse, she can apply for a subsidised one for her. It costs about 1 euro per week . Waiting times vary depending on the area and medical condition of the person ( eg: frail, prone to falls etc).

for a sophisticated system try isle systems www.islesystems.com - its a lone worker system which could very esily be used as a medical call system and works in tandem with a sim card from any of the mobile networks, so its completely portable.
