Has anybody had their med 1 form inspected by revenue?
I received a letter today asking for my receipts from 2005. We had quite a big claim that year totalling €4,000. I have gone through my files and can find everything up to €3,900.
I am sure the missing €100 is for 2 doctors receipts which i will continue to search for.
Is it reasonable to send in everything minus €100? What is the possible outcome of this? Will my full claim be rejected or would i just have to pay back for the 2 receipts i am missing?
 
I'd imagine that they will just deduct the €100 from the claim. I can't see there being any further repercussions. But I am not a tax practitioner/expert.
 
Revenue can inspect Med 1's "randomly", although they tend to inspect claims for big amounts of relief.

I'd recommend that you take copies of all your receipts just incase any go missing in the post or anything like that.

Revenue won't claw-back the totality of your claim as you are only missing €100. Is this including the €125 excess? They will more than likely waive the amount, although in theory they could charge you a 10% surcharge and interest on the total liability (being the clawed-back amount).

I wouldn't worry to much about it, Revenue operate common sense - They will more than likely understand that with the passing of time receipts can go missing.

One thing I would recommend is to be completely up front with Revenue and explain your situation.

I'd send in what you have with a cover note saying you've lost two doctors receipts for 100 Euro.

Could they charge a surcharge if the return is submitted on time? I have had the odd case where as a result of a revenue audit, additional tax liabilities were identified. Revenue imposed interest and penalties on the overdue amount, but never a surcharge.

Yes they can charge you the 10% surcharge, they can deem the return to be inaccurate and therefore void or fraudulent resulting in the charge. It's not going to happen unless you are dealing with the large cases section of Revenue in Dublin Castle.
 
It's highly unlikely the Revenue will go ballistic over the missing 100 in receipts, which only amounts to a pittance in terms of the associated tax deduction. If you know which receipts are missing, request copies from the doctors in question. If not, apologise to the Revenue and explain the situation. Above all, relax. The chances are the Revenue will be happy with you being able to supply the vast majority of the receipts. If they're not, the fines associated with the overclaim should not be significant, even after a few years.
 
Thanks for your replies. I have asked receptionist at GPs if they can give me copies but all of their 2005 accounts are with their Accountant. She is going to check with GP to see if they might be able to reissue them.

Both visits were for my son and were only a few weeks apart - He was given prescription both times and I have the prescription receipts so maybe If i explain situation this will be enough for revenue?

Not a good enough excuse. Even if the accountant has all the info then it should not be a problem for the accountant to photocopy 2 receipts, if they are given the dates that apply. In any event, the 2005 return for the GP should have been submitted to revenue 18 months ago, and the 2006 return 6 months ago, so if the accountant still has all the GP's info, then maybe the GP is far from tax compliant.
