Does anyone know of any software that accurately measures sound/noise levels. I would require an exact decibel measurement using different materials and sound barriers. Kind of an experiment. Possibly cheap and easily attainable. It could be possible that windows xp may have this capibility somewhere but I cant find it as yet.

There are lots of sound recording/manipulation utilities around. Audacity is free. What's important is that you calibrate your microphone. In other words, you need a controllable sound source that emits a sound at X decibels. You record this sound onto your PC and ensure that the software registers it's amplitude correctly (i.e. the same decibel level). You should do it for various decibel settings to make sure you cover a range of decibel levels.
