Maximum postal order amount of €650

Does anyone know why the maximum amount on a postal order is €650?

I needed one for a higher amount and so had to get two postal orders combined thus incurring two separate fees of €3.70 each.

I had to present with cash to get the postal order, it's not like a cheque that could potentially bounce, I don't understand why there needs to be any maximum..

Something to do with money laundering?

Don't think it can be that. As far as I know the limit for ML is something like €12,700 or maybe it's €5,000 but shouldn't be impact for an amount as low as €650.

It's hard enough to get a bank draft these days with all the bank closures etc. and then to have to pay on the double for a postal order is frustrating. Just seems to be extra charges everywhere you turn
