Matches/Phosphorus Smell in bedroom

We've recently removed an old built in warddrobe and carpet in the spare bedroom. After getting it painted we've noticed that there's now a smell of matches/phosphorus in the room. It now seems to be spreading to the bedroom next door and the room downstairs.

Does anyone have an ideas what it could be as am afraid to get the room recarpeted or have anyone sleep in it until we know if safe.

That smell usually comes from dog/cat pee. Wonder if the old carpet covered up the smell from the floorboards?

Pop to Woodies/B&Q for oder eliminator and spray it around and see what happens. Keep the windows open as well to fully ventilate the plce. The floorboards might need a real good scrub with bleach or something to eliminate the smell, if animals is what is causing it.
