I got married last year and informed the revenue and they told me to send in the relevent form by the end of the year as the tax wouldnt change till the end of the tax year. I have only thought of doing that now but i have been claiming single parent allowance since my wife and i didnt live together till we got married. My query is, will i owe revenue money now because i have had the extra allowance for a few months? My wife only works 2 days a week so will taking her credits help? I want to try and get this sorted in my head before i ring the revenue. Any help would be appreciated...

the tax position would be. Assume you are higher earner. looking at tax only

2008 tax year- both seem as single people.

2009 tax year-
self
ask for tax band 45,400 for self taxable at 20% and balance 41%.
take full married tax credit of 3660

-wife earn up to 27,400 at 20% balance 41%
- she will get paye credit of 1830

the above should cancel out single parent and band already taken in 09. all depends on what your wife's salary is.

if you provide your annual income and wife annual income you would get a more accurate answer

do some kind of comp before contacting revenue as they might be better way to divide credits and bands

or

alternatively

get single parent credit and band corrected- repay excess tax claimed

and do year end tax return(joint) to balance up
