Marriage Tax benefits?

I was married in 2004 but we are still separate on the tax system. Last year i rang for a balancing statement for the last few years as i know i overpaid, the person i spoke to advised i wait and fill out the assessable spouse form as it would be a bigger benefit in the end.

However from reading here, it seems there is no difference? Can someone clarify?
I earn over 50k and she earns a little over 30k.
Is there a benefit? Surely there must be some benefit if Gay rights are looking for marriage etc so they can avail of the same tax benefits of married couples?

My main question is, should i just ask for my balancing statements for the last few years or is there a benefit in waiting and filling out the assessable spouse form. What would be my best option on said form?

Thanks, i did not find that page in the search. Although both links are the same, should the second one be different?

So it looks like my best option is joint assessed and divide up my tax credits, giving me more as i make more?

If it were me I would be filling up that assessable spouse form as it appears to me there are benefits in being jointly assessed.

I would then send in copies of P60's for you and spouse for 2004,05,06,& 07 and request joint balancing statements (not sure if they will back-track but you only know if you try)

I called the Athlone tax office, very helpful. They said fax in the form before 31st and send in all P60's since 2004 and also any claims for bins etc and medical. They also told me what the best options to fill in are.
