Mapped network drive disconnecting

I have a small network with a Windows Server 2003. I recently added a Buffalo LinkStation Live NAS unit onto the network, which works fine. On the 2003 server, I have mapped this device as a network drive and intend to use it for scheduled backups of the server using the standard Backup utility in Windows Server 2003. When I first tried a manual backup, it worked OK but my scheduled backups are failing. On investigation, I found that the mapped drive had disconnected but, as soon as I browsed into it, it connected again. It seems to time out and Backup can't find it later on. I have tried to find an answer on the internet but some of the topics are a bit deep for me.

Firstly, in this case, which is timing out - the actual Buffalo NAS itself or the server that is trying to write to it? I have tried the command net config server /autodisconnect:-1 but this made no difference. Can anyone help, please?
