We're looking to go to Malaysia for two weeks in April (the first two)

Any recomendations based on past experiences. Cities to visit, beach areas to visit etc.

We don't really want to do the backapacking thing so bring on the nice air conditioned hotels with turn down service.

KL nice, for beaches Penang and Langkawi, especially the latter, some fantastic resorts on Pangor Laut but very pricey. For something different got to Kota Kinabalo, jungle, reefs amazing.

Langkawi is beautiful. northern end of the island has the nicest beaches water etc. Tanjung Rhu seems the resort of choice (and costs a few bob too)

Hi,

For a nice beaches go to Langkawi or Pangkor Island.

If you like city life, head for Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Johor Bahru.

Malacca (or Melaka) is well known for historical sites. You can see signs of Portugese, Dutch, and English heritage.

Best idea would be to stay a few days and a number of locations. Langkawi is nice and restful (try the 'island hopping trip'). You can see the whole island in a day. The aquarium at Pantai Cenang is good for an hour. Duty free shopping there and also at Kuah, the principal town. 90 minutes gets you over the mainland (Alor Setar or Kuala Perlis) by hydrofoil. The other cities and resorts mentioned are good choices, but also consider East coast resorts such as Kuantan or Kuala Terenganu, both on the South China Sea. If you go to Johor Bahru, you're just a few km from Singapore, but you need to do the full immigration gig to go there and back. Or to get away from the tropics, go up to Cameron Highlands, where the weather is like a summer's day in Kerry (circa 6,000 feet). They have tea plantations there. Or, for the 'Blackpool on a mountain experience' go up to the Genting highlands where they've got entertainment, gambling and amusement parks.

Really enjoyed KL. Langkawi is lovely but fairly quiet. Not a place for crazy nightlife. I've been there twice though and loved it.

Langkawi to chill out. Nice relaxing area, scenic blah blah. If you are moving around a lot, leave Langkawi until last as it's a great R&R spot. I recommend the Berjaya resort.

KL is super. Fantastic food, but if possible avoid the big touristy eateries, for obvious reasons. Malays are very friendly helpful people, and don't seem to be out to scam you unlike a lot in that region....
