While the Legal Services Reform Bill will help to reduce costs and improve access to law, there are probably greater savings to be made by making the courts systems more efficient.
Removing restrictive practices may reduce the fees charged by solicitors and barristers, but if they were needed less, it would reduce costs even further.
Paul McMahon of Lavelle Coleman has written about how the UK courts systems were made more efficient in 1999, [broken link removed].
We have done something similar with the Commercial Courts. Why can't we do it with all courts.
In particular, I liked this bit:
