Making AIB payments via my laptop - still need a card reader to approve.

I do my banking via my laptop rather than via my phone.

If I want to pay directly into someone else's bank account from my bank account, I must approve the payment with my debit card and card reader. I can't use my phone to approve the payment. It seems very old fashioned.

I checked with AIB and they said that this is the only way to do it.

Of course, I can make card payments and approve them on my phone.

Are the other banks the same?
 
If you want to approve a payment to someone else's bank account with your phone, you have to make the payment through your phone. Although you still have to use the card reader if you want to make it a standing order.

I think even some transactions on the phone app require the card reader (paying money to foreign accounts). This reminds me that I need to replace the battery in mine.

If you want to send me a payment using your computer, can you do so without needing a card reader? In other words, you set it up on your computer and then approve it using your phone?

Don't want to take Brendan's thread off topic but this just reminded me how important the card reader is and its a long time also since I checked mine. The CR 2032 batteries are not that common either and depending on where you buy them can be quite expensive. I found IKEA have cards of them priced cheaply. This video helps with the replacement as I can't see any instruction leaflet with mine.

From their FAQs it would appear the first one is free from AIB and follow-ons are €5.50 which would be more expensive than replacement batteries

There is no charge for your first AIB Card Reader. There is a fee of €5.50 for each additional/replacement AIB Card Reader ordered.

I use a lot of CR2025 and CR2032 for home automation stuff. I found that the IKEA ones really don't last, and also appear to loose their charge when stored. Dunnes keep the branded ones which in my experience have a much longer shelf and working life, and you can use 10/50 vouchers to take the edge off the price.

This is how it works for BOI. With the additional benefit that you can make payments of up to €20,000 per day rather than AIB's lower limits.

It remains to be seen how much the Irish Banks will have to change their approach to transaction security with the advent of SEPA Instant later this year.
